how should I launder my vintage dress?

I just acquired a dress from my gues would be the mid-1950’s. It is a lace overlay with a silk underlay. It has some stains that I really hope to get out. I have no idea how to wash it, like should I do it by hand or take it to the dry cleaners?
If it matters the stains look like sweat stains under the arms and maybe some kind of lactation stain in the bust area. I really want to get it sanitary too
It seems to be handmade so no tags =-(

I’d hesitate to launder a silk dress that old. And armpit stains are probably permanent on a silk that old (actually, I’m surprised the silk hasn’t shattered there.)

Dry cleaning would be safest, but even that may be problematic.

If you’re determined to launder it yourself, I’d suggest either a detergent formulated for silks (NOT WOOLITE!!!) or regular shampoo. Minimize agitation and do not wring or twist… roll up in a towel or three to remove some water, and then dry flat — wet silk is not a very strong fiber. Know that it may shrink or fade or change luster or texture when placed in water.

Depending on the construction of the dress, a good dressmaker or alterationist may be able to reconstruct the underdress.
